This writing is for you, John, because I wrote my entry in Chinese first. I started my volunteer work for the small community college this Thursday morning. This picture is a cactus I found next to the public libray.
Today's job is an one-time job. Mr. Hsien told me over the phone that I could come to help with dying the fabrics. These costumes are for the upcoming parade on Oct. 15 as part of the Tamshui Art Festival events.
I showed up at 10 am half sleepy since I didn’t go to bed until 3 am. But a promise is a promise. I met with 3 or 4 other female volunteers and we worked together to die 32 skirts (see picture below). I saw an older man who was pasting paper onto a huge boat float as the picture to the right. It's made of bamboo structure and then pasted with paper, and finally it will be patinted. Different people are working on different things. This is the first year that I stay in Taiwan in the fall so I don’t know much about the event. I was told that this type of event has been going on for three years.
I was told also that there would be an outdoor theater in Battery Park on Oot. 22. I hope I will be able to see it. Today’s experience is not too exciting and I’m not sure if they will call me for other tasks. I walked home with an old lady who happens to live close to mine. On the way, she showed me and told me the names of the plants we saw. She seemed to be very knowledgeable. But I took some photos of these flowers and two of them are on the bottom.
