 My dear,

Today, there were three friends from college came to see me. Last night I was very disappointed because some couldn’t make it or didn’t respond. But today, when we saw my 6 visitors, I felt fine. As it turned out, 6 were just all I could handle. Don’t get me wrong, it went well, but I just realized that it would be much easier on me if we just met in a restaurant and left.

As usual, I cleaned up the whole house from top to bottom. Then I threw the sofa covers into the washing machine. Initially I was worried that the covers might shrink and I wouldn’t be able to put them back. The zipper was caught at times. But eventually, it all went well. I felt a small triumph in my life in Taiwan.

My first visitor arrived at 11 am, and she was Chen, an elementary teacher. I wasn’t ready and still in my pajamas. Laura was ready, so she went to open the door. Chen brought some plums as a gift. They tasted good, not acidic. I bought some vitamins for her from the US, so she came to pick them up.

The second visitor was Heidi. She asked me to buy some thread from the US for her. She brought some crafts that she made for Laura and a book on how to make stuff animals. She said that I was the only one among my whole class who really enjoyed life.

She said I could do things that I really liked. I guess she meant I am not working for a living. (Karien is not working either.) She said she started a one-person company, selling hand-made bags, dolls etc by her. Laura got some tips from her about making dolls and she loaned us a book. Maybe you will see something made by her soon.

The third is a family of 4, husband and wife and two teenage daughters. They are all vegetarian and Buddhists. My friend, Chang, the mother, confessed that she had bi-polar, and her religion helped her greatly. Fortunately, they are not trying to convert me.

I confessed that I had depression. She said she was surprised to know that. I said that in the US, people go to counselors and use medication for emotional disorders and relationship difficulty.  She asked, “How did you survive without holding a job?” “My husband had a good job, and we have some investments,” I said.  My religion is writing and doing art. Everyone needs something.  Do I look like that I have it all? (according to Chang.)

They all left at 4 pm. After that Laura and I both lied down to take a rest. It was more tiring than I expected. We went to my sister’s restaurant to eat first, and then they came to our apartment. I couldn’t do it without Laura. She guided them upstairs and took them down to the parking lot. The security is tight, so we need to use my pass card for entrance and exit. I also got some phones, so it was necessary to have more than myself to host a party.
